CULLMAN COUNTY, Ala. - Firefighters were called to a house on County Road 1869 in Cullman County around 1:00 a.m. Wednesday. The family said they were fast asleep when the fire started.
The mother of the family says she woke to the sound of crackling. Upon further investigation, she found the home on fire. Her husband was able to get their 5-year-old out unharmed. However, the home was engulfed in flames by the time she made it to her 13-year-old daughter's room. The woman carried the teen through a wall of flames to get them both to safety.
Emergency crews flew the girl to the UAB Burn Center in Birmingham. Mom was also taken there. Each has severe burns, though we are told their injuries are not life-threatening.
The father and the child were not hurt in the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The family's home is a total loss. Friends have set up an account to help with the emergency expenses.
Donations, earmarked for the Dan and Jenn Gilbreath Family, may be made at any branch of Redstone Federal Credit Union.
